The Living Desert is one of the most unique tourist attractions in Southern California. The park's 3,000 acres are home to more than 10,000 animals and include a giant aquarium that allows visitors to view exotic marine life up close. The tank pavilion, which opened in January 2019 after 11 months of construction and $2.7 million in expenses (donated by philanthropist Harold Matzner), houses four tanks designed specifically for holding the whale sharks and other fish found at the park:

- The Giant Groupers Tank is home to two of the largest groupers in captivity. One of these magnificent fish can grow up to seven feet long and weigh over 500 pounds!
- The Coral Reef Tank is home to a rare species of coral and several species of colorful tropical fish including flame angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish and tangs. These corals are used primarily for research and teaching purposes; they're grown in controlled conditions so they don't harm other animals or humans when touched by visitors.

Matzner was born in Europe and raised in New York. He moved to Las Vegas in 1968 where he opened his furniture store with his wife Joanie that same year. The couple sold their business in 1997 but continue to live here today.
In addition to his involvement with The Living Desert and other community organizations, Harold has also been involved with numerous charities; including Ronald McDonald House Charities as well as several hospitals throughout Southern California where he lives part-time during warm weather months.
